Abstract

Sustainable business development has become an increasingly important concern in contemporary management as businesses face growing economic, social, environmental, and ethical challenges. Conventional approaches to sustainability generally emphasize the balance between economic performance, social responsibility, and environmental protection. However, the Islamic tradition provides a broader normative framework through maqasid al-shariah, which places human welfare, justice, protection of essential interests, and prevention of harm at the center of social and economic activity. This study aims to examine the relationship between Islamic business management and sustainable business development from the perspective of maqasid al-shariah and to analyze how Islamic principles can provide a broader foundation for sustainable managerial practices. The research employs a library research method with a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach. Data were obtained from scholarly books, academic journal articles, Islamic economic literature, and relevant normative sources addressing Islamic business management, maqasid al-shariah, maslahah, sustainability, business ethics, and corporate responsibility. The literature was analyzed through identification, classification, interpretation, comparison, and conceptual synthesis. The findings indicate that sustainable business development is substantially compatible with Islamic business principles when sustainability is understood not merely as long-term economic survival but as the continuous creation of legitimate economic, social, ethical, and environmental benefits. Maqasid al-shariah provides a comprehensive normative foundation for directing business decisions toward the protection of wealth, human welfare, dignity, justice, and social stability while preventing harm. The study argues that Islamic business management can contribute to a broader conception of sustainability in which profitability, stakeholder welfare, ethical responsibility, and environmental stewardship are integrated within a unified framework of maslahah. Sustainable Islamic business therefore requires not only financial continuity but also responsible governance, fair stakeholder relationships, ethical resource utilization, and long-term contribution to human welfare.
